Many people struggle to develop their calves, which is a lagging body part in much of the population. Therefore, any advice helps! If one wants bigger calves, they should target their Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscle as much as possible. These are the two calf muscles.
Regarding the calves, the Soleus muscle is much smaller than the Gastrocnemius. While the Soleus only crosses the ankle joint, the Gastrocnemius crosses the ankle and the knee. To target your Gastrocnemius, you are going to want to do standing calf raises.
However, to isolate your Soleus muscle, you can take the Gastrocnemius out of the picture. Because it crosses your knee joint, when you bend your knee, that muscle gets put on slack. It now isn’t nearly as active. Therefore, when you do seated calf raises, this muscle is bent and far more work is going to be done by your Soleus. So if you want that extra edge in calf development, do the seated calf raise exercise and that should give you an extra boost in getting you the results you want!
